During a recent battle techical schematics for a gigantic space station, code named The Death Star, have been unearthed by Rebel spies, and a young woman who is a dissident member of the Imperial Senate, under the cover of a diplomatic mission to the planet Alderaan, is trying to smuggle these plans to the Rebellion. But her spacecraft is attacked by a vast warship of the Empire and seized. The dissident Senator is captured, but the plans for the Death Star are nowhere to be found. When did the name of the first star wars movie got changed to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope?
so ists IV V VI..and then the prequels.how where they called before the prequels were made star wars I II III ..??
i meant the part with episode IV …when the first three movies were made…george lucas didan’t know he woud be making three more…

From wikipedia:
Title:
The first film was originally released as Star Wars, without Episode IV or the subtitle A New Hope. The 1980 sequel, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, featured an episode number and subtitle in the opening crawl. When the original film was re-released in 1981, Episode IV: A New Hope was added above the original opening crawl.

Number of films:
Although Lucas claims that only six films were ever planned, representatives of Lucasfilm discussed plans for nine or 12 possible films in early interviews. The film was re-released theatrically in 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, and with additional scenes and enhanced special effects in 1997.

Star Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi have always had these titles.
They have always been ‘Episode IV, V, and VI, it was never a secret that these were the 4th, 5th, and 6th episodes. George Lucas always had the intention of making the other 3 movies, he just knew they would turn out better when technology made enough advances for him to achieve the results he was after.
Smart move, I think. Star Wars will always be known for the ’shock’ line ‘Luke, I am your father’

These were their names when they were first released. They were not added afterwards.

In the Script it was called Star Wars: The Adventure of Luke Starkiller. Luke was then renamed Skywalker and shortly before theatrical release, Lucas renamed the movie Star Wars: A New Hope.

Everyone who’s already answered are correct — watch the opening again. In the nice scolling words that give you "the story so far", the first words on the screen are Episode IV A New Hope.
Even in the original release.

Everyone is correct. Lucas planned for there to be 3 sets of 3 films before the original film was released. It took 16 years from the end of the middle set of films to the beginning of the 1st set. George Lucas has since said that he will not make the final set of films…

Maybe he should hire J.J. Abrams to do them?

Other answers are flat-out WRONG.
When "Star Wars" was released to theaters in 1977, the opening scroll did NOT say "Episode IV". When The Empire Strikes back was released to theaters in 1980, it DID say "Episode V".
When the original film was re-released to theaters in 1981, "Episode IV: A New Hope" was added above the original opening crawl.
